5 of the Best Rappers from Ghana
There are many different genres of music popular in Ghana. Afrobeat – a kind of
music that blends a variety of elements and styles including American-inspired jazz,
soul, funk with West African fuji music and highlife – originated in Ghana and
continues to be popular. Afro-pop (known alternately as afrobeats, but not to be
confused with afrobeat) also continues to have dedicated fans, helped by the depth
and breadth of the music genre.
But rap is still ranking amongst Ghana’s most consumed music genres, which is
undoubtedly why there are so many up-and-coming rappers who continue to battle it
out for the top spot. Don’t forget, too, that Nigeria also produces incredible rap artists
such as Tekno musician from Nigeria, so if you’re looking for your hit of West African
rappers, be sure to check out Nigerian rappers. But regarding the Ghanian output,
these are just five of the best.
Ghana’s 5 best rappers
Sarkodie
You can’t have a list of Ghana’s top rappers and not include Sarkodie. Nominated for
multiple awards at the 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards including ‘Best Rap
Performance’, and winner of ‘Best Hip Hop Artist’, Sarkodie consistently ranks
amongst the country’s most popular artists all-round, but is also well celebrated for
his rap.
Some of his most popular songs include those with Kwesi Arthur, another name on
this list of Ghana’s best rappers, and the two clearly have a great partnership going,
dominating the Ghanaian industry. With monthly listeners of 395,198 according to
Spotify, it’s clear that Sarkodie isn’t going anywhere.
Kwesi Arthur
As described above, Kwesi Arthur and Sarkodie have a great working partnership,
regularly collaborating on award-nominated songs. Arthur rose to fame with the hit
single ‘Grind Day’, and has since worked with other Ghanaian musicians including
M.anifest and Medikal, as well as international writers like South African Nasty C.
He also recently featured on the cover of Rap Life, and his song ‘Live From The 233’
was one of the most streamed African songs on Apple Music in 2020.
Medikal
With an average of 90,153 monthly listeners according to Spotify, Medikal has a well-
deserved spot on this list of top Ghanaian rappers. He decided on his name ‘Medikal’
as a result of interest in rapping about doctors, surgeons, and the wider medical
industry more generally.
He won Hip Hop Artist of the Year and Artist of the Year at the 2021 Vodafone
Ghana Music Awards.
M.anifest
Known professionally as M.anifest, this Ghanaian musician has worked with the likes
of Damon Albarn (of Blur and Gorillaz fame) as well as Tony Allen. He divides his
time between Ghana and the USA, two countries which continue to influence his
music.
In 2016, he and Sarkodie released diss tracks against each other, but settled their
differences in 2018.
Joey B
Having collaborated with artists including Sarkodie and Fuse ODG, Joey B has
cemented his name amongst the best rappers in Ghana. His best-known song is
‘Tonga’, and he was nominated for Hip Hop Artist of the Year in 2021 at the
Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, but lost to Medikal. He was also brand ambassador
for Adidas (Ghana) in 2015.
